Dewi Sartika, Heroine from West Java

Dewi Sartika

Dewi Sartika is educational heroes for Indonesian women. She was born on 4th December 1884 at Cicalengka, Bandung, West Java. Her father, R.Rangga Somanegara was a fighter who fight for Indonesian independence. She built a school named Sekolah Isteri. In this school, the students who were only woman were taught how to count, read, write, sew, crochet, and embroider.

Dewi Sartika is a very humble person. She shared her knowledge with poor people. In ancient times, the poor people could not write and read, so they were often cheated by the colonizer, so they were often cheated by the colonizer with fake letter which harm them.

She is also very patient. Many times she fell, many times her dreams nearly ran aground, and many times she encountered problems and obstacles, but again and again she got up and kept fighting. She fought for the education of Indonesian women. Although it was difficult, she keep trying.

For me, she is the bravest woman ever. It's not easy to fight against old tradition which not allow woman to get an education. Surely she got opposition from the elders or the local community on her idea of let woman to get an education.
